We represent criminalized survivors of domestic violence in applications for resentencing under New York's Domestic Violence Survivor's Justice Act. In order to be eligible for resentencing, an applicant must be in DOCCS custody serving a sentence with a minimum term more than 8 years for an eligible crime committed before August 1, 2019.

I direct the Criminal Justice Advocacy Clinic where law students work under my supervision to represent clients in post-conviction proceedings. My research focuses on sentencing, parole, prisons, and avenues for post-conviction relief. Outside of the clinic, I also teach a course on sentencing and prisons.

I am both a research scientist and a licensed clinical psychologist, so my work involves both clinical interventions for families and conducting research on relationships in families and child development. I am interested in understanding risk and resilience in family systems, including the cascading impact of intimate partner and family violence, in order to inform prevention and intervention efforts. I am especially interested in how substance use and violence interact within family systems, particularly from pregnancy through early child development.

Our Story

Drs. Jessica Fitzpatrick & Catherine Mazzotta have over 30 years combined experience working at agencies addressing domestic violence before switching careers to teaching and research.

Dr. Mazzotta worked closely with Catherine Cerulli, J.D, Ph.D. and the Laboratory of Interpersonal Violence and Victimization (LIVV), founded in 2002 and housed at the Dept of Psychiatry, University of Rochester Medical Center. LIVV addresses Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) through research, education, advocacy, and the law.

Using LIVV as the model, the WNY Intimate Partner & Family Violence Consortium was formed and is housed at Buffalo State University's Social Work department. The first community meetings were held in February 2023 to introduce the community to the opportunities available through collaborative community-based participatory research and identify research priorities.

The Consortium is thrilled to begin its' first research project while continuing to grow our membership with the goal of creating an inclusive space for dialogue that shapes social change and leads to the prevention of violence in our relationships and our homes in our community.
